When I think of pears, my brain leaps back in time. My mother used to can fruit when I was a teenager: tomatoes, peaches and pears and strawberry jam. Hundreds of jars were neatly lined up on shelves in the basement each year.
The pears had such a naked, pale look! Stripped of their golden green skin, they were a nearly opaque light cream hue and floated in the quart-sized Mason jars in a sweet, clear liquid. Each had been cut in half from stem to calyx and a round section hollowed out from the seed area. They weren’t our favorite fruit that way, but the light bite through them had a loving sweetness to it that no commercially canned fruit would yield.
The sweat of those August days in a steamy kitchen, hanging over a stove full of jars and lids sterilizing and fruit cooking was evidence of a love of craft and a devotion to the family. You could taste that love in each bite of fruit.
When I became a digital artist, pears spoke in a new way to me. The shape of each fruit was characteristic of nothing else and lent itself so gracefully to art! Apples are round, oranges are round, nuts are round, tomatoes are round – nothing else has the shape of a pear. I began to fall in love with the colors and shapes of the pear and designing products featuring pears.
Some other time, I would like to grow some pear trees next to my apple trees near a lake in northern Michigan. I imagine the taste of fresh pears served with wedges of cheese and, perhaps, some pear cider to wash it down with!
